Home is a Four-Letter Word

Me, motherhood and a sorely neglected house

Mess, messier, really messy

Hhhh! That was the sound of the sharp intake of breath I took when Hubby announced tonight that he would perform a DIY project.

A wall bracket for the TV had arrived via Amazon.com and he would attach it. And thus he would vastly improve this corner of our living room…

… which, like so many other corners of our house, is too busy, too cluttered. What the hell is that floating shelf doing there? Oops! Put up rashly one evening after a flying visit to IKEA. I think we just thought the idea of a floating shelf was cool. We didn’t think how stupid it would look above a TV.

(Notice the show that’s on TV. ‘Victorious’ or some such tween nonsense. Sweetpea had just returned home after a full day at summer camp and needed her television fix. Munchkin doesn’t have a TV-watching say when his sister is in the house. She has somehow trained him so that when I make her ask him what he wants to watch – because I don’t think it’s unfair that she hogs the programming – he says he wants to watch ‘Victorious’ or some such tween nonsense.)

I left, to go out with a friend, hopeful that my cluttered corner may be transformed. And I came back to this…

… TV on the fire hearth, tool paraphernalia on the floor, and the kitchen table still littered with Amazon.com packaging.

And while the TV does fit rather neatly there, it’s not really on, is it? Especially as I am holding a breakfast meeting right here tomorrow morning, and it’s 11.18pm and there’s zero chance of the space improving overnight. That’s because Hubby says he doesn’t have the right drill bit. Whaaaat? He who is so prepared, so instructions-obsessed, so anal about any job he undertakes, he actually constructed a cardboard template of the telly, which he attached to the bracket, all the better to aid him in his DIY task. Here is said template:

(Notice The Mutt’s toy in the background, and Munchkin’s toy – aka the measuring tape – in the foreground. God our lives are full and exciting.)

So Hubby has gone to bed, apparently not giving a toss about the state of my living room. If I hadn’t have just had a large (and very yummy, might I say – blueberry and lemon) martini, I might shout and stomp my feet. But as you can see from Pic #2, The Big Bang Theory is on.

Martini + Sheldon = chilled and happy.

Hubby = in big trouble if he doesn’t find his drill bit tomorrow.

Yes, and the smaller the better when when they come in cute little packages like this. Check out this 64 sq ft guest pod, and other small space ideas, in this feature in 3 Story Magazine.
